Saddle Stitching
Saddle Stitching is a method of binding one or more printed sections together, by means of wire staples (stitches) through the spine and centrefold. Otherwise known as Booklet Making or Stitched. Perfect for Brochures, Annual Reports, Booklets, Newsletters, Price Lists, Catalogues, Parish Plans, Town Plans. Our Stitch and Trimming machine stitch, fold and then trim the fore edge to produce a perfect finished document. 90% of our saddle stitching/booklet making is done on our Plockmatic SR90 Booklet Maker and Trimmer, for more bespoke sizes we have a manual saddle stitcher and then trim the fore edge.

Perfect Binding
Perfect Binding the method we use for binding printed sheets are they are too thick to saddle stitch. Perfect Binding is most commonly used on paperback books. Suitable for Price Lists, Magazines, Brochures, Catalogues, PLOF, Books, Parish Plans, Town Plans. We print the pages as collated sets, trim them to size then mill the spine (the spine is ground to provide a key), and put them through a hot melt adhesive. A cover is attached to the spine and is formed around the book. The minimum thickness of a perfect bound print job is approx 3mm (around 48pp). The maximum thickness is 50mm. We have a perfect binding machine at our Sleaford branch which is ideal for producing one off single copies of a document or can bind up to 300 books per hour.

Stab Stitching
Stab Stitching is used mainly for binding office documents with two or more very strong, long staples that bind together loose sheets up to 25mm thick. This process suites products such as Office stationery eg. NCR Pads, Purchase Order Pads, Invoice Pads, Sales Order Forms etc. We print the sheets as collated sets, they are then stab stitched with our stab stitching machine approx 8mm from the edge and to ensure the item is secure and presentable we then apply calico tape to the spine.

Corner Stitch
As stab stitching but just a single stitch in the corner of a document which binds loose sheets suitable for documents up to 3mm thick. Commonly used for hand outs, proposal documents etc. The pages are collated in order and a single wire stitch (staple) is used to secure the document in the corner. Our digital press in Boston is able to corner stitch as it prints collated sets.

Wiro Binding
Ideal for binding loose leaves using a metal wire loops formed from a single continuous wire run through punched holes on the binding edge. Ideal for Price Lists, PLOF, Training Manuals, Calendars, Note Pads, Parish Plans, Town Plans. The pages are printed as collated sets (page order), punched, and a metal wire spine is inserted through the document and then clenched. Wiro Binding allows the book to lie flat and is such is well suited to the production of manuals. Both our Boston and Sleaford office has wirio binding on site. We also use this method to produce our calendars and diaries.

Comb Binding
Again very similar to wiro binding, but instead uses a plastic comb instead of a wire. Mainly used for office documents. Our Boston branch has a full Comb Binding solution.

Binding Screws
Used for binding loose sheets. Ideal for product swatches, photo albums, bespoke brochures etc. The pages are gathered in order, drilled, and the pillars and posts are inserted until they meet - they are secure by screwing the pillar and post together. Available in different lengths to allow for different book thicknesses.

PRINTING FIRM PRESSES AHEAD DESPITE TOUGH ECONOMY

A Lincolnshire printing firm has doubled in size since May following a move into new premises in Sleaford and the purchase of a second business in Boston.

Managing Director Matt Savage set up Digital Printing Services (DPS) in 2004 working from home before moving into a newly converted workshop which was designed internally according to their specification in Sleaford in May 2010.
